Gentle, friendly, and adoring, with a mischievous dose
of stubbornness, the English Bulldog is incessantly loyal
to its family. It usually gets along well with other animals,
is particularly fond of children, and does best indoors.

Bulldog
History
The English Bulldog descended from ancient Mastiffs
that originated in Asia and were brought to Europe
by nomads. Mastiffs were bred for ferocity in fighting,
holding, or bringing down aggressive prey.
Some
say the Bulldog may have originally been bred
to be a butchers’ dog
to control unruly oxen, but everyone agrees the
beginnings of the bulldog
is the result of mankind's desire
to shape him to the specific purpose of
the blood sports known as bull baiting and bear
baiting.
The
shoulders of the bulldog are placed on the outside
of the body, allowing the dog to crouch low to
the ground shielding the dog from the bull's horns
when it charges. As the bull passes by, the head
and forequarters are very well developed, so that
the dog is able to spring to the bull's ears or
throat.
A short muzzle and wide lower jaw were needed for the dog to clamp itself to
the bull's nose like a vise, and the nose had to be upturned so that the dog
could still breathe while clinging to the bull.
Fortunately,
bull-baiting was declared against the law in
1835. Within a decade the
numbers of Bulldogs declined drastically almost
to extinction.
Dog show fanciers eventually decided to reconstruct
the breed, but wanted to tone down the aggressive
temperament of the original Olde English Bulldogge.
They crossed the remnants of the existing stock
with the Pug and over the years that followed
they developed the modern English Bulldog.
The breed was first
registered by the American Kennel Club in 1934 in the non-sporting group
and today is a popular show dog throughout
the world.
Although, English Bulldogs kept their physical
characteristics, their fighting personality
gradually changed to that of a family pet. Today's bulldog
has been bred so that the combatant urges are
no longer there and he doesn't see any
sense
in attacking a bull. |
